Elementary ASL I with William Blais

Take your first step toward learning American Sign Language (ASL) and fingerspelling in this Elementary ASL I class with William Blais. The course will focus on conversational skills, grammar, and vocabulary as it is used in the Deaf community.  The class will be held on Tuesdays from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and Thursdays from 10:00 am - Noon from April 14 to May 14 and then, after a short break, from June 9 to July 9, for a total of 10 weeks.  Each class will build on the information learned in the previous class.  The learning is cumulative.  The break will give students ample time to practice what has been learned.

William Blais began his ASL education at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, CA., followed by attending an ASL interpreter program at the University of Colorado at Greeley.  Mr. Blais completed his ASL education by earning a bachelor’s degree in deaf studies from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., and he was an ASL tutor at College of the Desert before becoming a full-time ASL instructor.  He taught ASL I and II simultaneously at College of the Desert and at Copper Mountain Community College in Joshua Tree, CA.  Mr. Blais was involved in the local Deaf community in California for many years, working with Deaf students and attending Deaf social events.

This program is free and open to the public but a reservation is required.  Class size is limited to 20 people.  No walk-ins permitted.
